In the Great Lakes region of Africa, land issues represent the most frequent source of conflict, exacerbated by the growing population and the return of refugees. But instead of going to courts, some citizens are having recourse to a much more efficient, cheap and peaceful solution to solve their disputes.

Since 2012, Search for Common Grounds has already trained over 6000 local mediators in Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This includes women mediators, who have helped revive the involvement of women in land affairs.

Regional encounters on land mediation also enabled cross-border learning, while radio programming provided a unique space for positive interactions between citizens and their authorities on key land issues of concern to them.
